Benefits of Northern CARE Membership

Northern CARE plays a major role in the advancement of northern recycling and waste management strategies on behalf of its membership, an important goal of municipal Councils.

A concern for northern municipalities is the upcoming changes to environmental legislation, which will bring new challenges, however new challenges open the door for new opportunities. Northern CARE has met some of those challenges and provided new opportunities for municipalities.

Below is an overview of the accomplishments of the past year by Northern CARE:

Northern CARE is and has been a representative on stakeholder committees:

  • E-Waste Stewardship Program

  • Landfill Bans

  • Hazardous Waste Disposal

  • Non-Hazardous Oilfield Waste Disposal

  • Transportation Study

  • Measurement Workshop

It is important to have Northern CARE represented, to open the lines of communication and to have the opportunity to share in the decision making process of the Alberta government

Northern CARE has played an active role in waste management education and awareness:

  • Northern CARE holds an annual Northern Alberta Recycling Conference, which has proven to be successful and is an excellent forum to meet and discuss waste management and recycling matters of mutual interest.

  • Northern CARE has submitted grant applications on behalf of northern schools to receive paper recycling bins and has organized the delivery of those bins. Currently, we have a total of 54 northern schools that have received paper bins.

  • Northern CARE has completed 128 vermi-composting presentations to northern schools in the last 2 years.  Northern CARE will do vermi-composting presentations to 25 northern schools annually.

  • Northern CARE has presented community recycle workshops.  Residents have the opportunity to receive information on what can be recycled and what the end result is of the recycled material.

  • Northern CARE continues to update it’s website with useful tools and information that anyone can benefit from.

Northern CARE continues to use a regional business approach to waste management:

  • Northern CARE developed a Regional business partnership with Ko-Rec-Type Corp. This partnership provides the opportunity to dispose of used printer cartridges at no cost to the businesses, hospitals, health units, industry, schools, and municipalities in northern Alberta.  This initiative will eliminate aluminium, plastic and oil from northern landfills.

  • Northern CARE developed a Regional business partnership with e-Cycle Solutions Technologies called e-CARE, to coordinate and divert e-waste from northern landfills and take advantage of the economics.  “Hubs” have been located at Grande Prairie, Athabasca and Cold Lake to facilitate the collection of regional e-waste. ARMA endorsed our regional business partnership and Northern CARE has been designated as a collector of e-waste. This initiative will eliminate hazardous waste from northern landfills.

Northern CARE is in the process of developing other Regional initiatives such as:

  • mCARE - to coordinate and collect “rack and bag” milk containers/other plastics

  • fllCARE -  to coordinate and collect fluorescent tubing

  • pCARE -  to coordinate and collect office paper, cardboard, and newspaper

  • wCARE - to coordinate and collect wireless equipment

Northern CARE membership is important in northern Alberta, as it brings together diverse interests and coordinates recycling plans and efforts to divert substantial waste from northern landfills by sharing knowledge and expertise.
